Poem by Lucine Kaplan

PARIS 1777

Stockings to this degree
were exclusively
worn by those close to Louis and Marie

The silk from overseas
only revealed
by the birds and the bees
under layers of lace bounty

Villagers of the city
declared upon cake
they shall eat

History
has a way to repeat

So as we turn the corner to 2030
let’s make sure we’re kissing the right feet

As we bend the knee
paying our lawfully charred fees
to someone at least
with a sense of genuine empathy
