Poem by Lucine Kaplan
UNCLE SAM SAYS / HOSTAGE (1942)
Uncle Sam said, “Nylons won the war”
But it’s a woman who discovered their use
for parachutes
and gun powder bags
And it’s the women
who donated their garments
to the flag
It’s the women
who raised
who fed
who nurtured
our soldiers
Women won that war
And yet, women are tied down over the fire
of the traditional home
If no one else, it’s she alone and grown
Grown to see the bigger picture
Grown to innovate
Grown to resource
He tries
to limit our power
within these 4 walls
As we rise above the flame
his instinct
to cut our ties
We fly
He, the gaslight
makes us believe
we are falling
Uncle Sam says,
“it’s impossible for women
to float above the sky”
So he invents a solution
ensuring we never fall in the flames
a commodity
Marketing to women everywhere with his new product
we could fly for the good of all
without pain
Under his idea, his control, his company
He knows, create a product for women with a promise
It’s women who will buy and never miss
With that promise, we are tied down again to
commodity
Until we remember who we are without him
Enter our next epiphany
